Applications
Gas Alarm Systems Ltd has supplied gas detection systems into a number of industries. Gas Alarm Systems are dedicated to providing safety systems designed to protect the personnel, equipment and processes of our customers. We have products and services design to meet the requirements in the following applications.
Car Parks
Underground or enclosed par parks require the use of ventilation fans to keep the air quality clean. It is not energy efficient to have these fans running constantly. To control the operation of the ventilation fans, the car park is monitoring for the build up of carbon monoxide, as it is a major constituent of vehicle exhaust fumes.
Automotive Industry
During the manufacture of vehicles, carbon monoxide and flammable gases can be present in various processes that pose a danger to employees, equipment and facilities.
Areas where these hazards are found include:
- Fuel loading on assemble lines.
- Spray paint booths
- Dryers
- Inspection pits
- Engine test cells
Chemical Industry
Toxic, combustible and flammable gases or substances are found throughout the chemical industry in a wide range of activities including refining, processing, storage and transportation. Process equipment, pipelines, valves, compressors and tanks are common potential sources of hazardous gas leaks that endanger people, equipment and facilities.
Areas where these hazards are found include:
- Storage facilities
- Chemical processing
- Refining
Food And Drinks Industry
In the food and drinks industry, complex processes require the use of potentially flammable and toxic materials, such as natural gas, carbon dioxide and oxygen. Equipment and personnel must be protected against combustible, toxic and flammable gases and asphyxiation.
Areas where these hazards are found include:
- Steam Processes
- Inert gases for packaging
- CO2 for carbonation
- Toxic gases for sterilisation
- Ammonia in refrigeration
- Effluent
Power Generation
In the power generation industry there are a wide variety of hazards depending on the fuel source. Equipment and personnel must be protected against combustible, toxic and flammable gases.
Areas where these hazards are found include:
- CHP power stations hazards include combustible and flammable gases.
- Hydrogen in battery rooms.
- Gas power station hazards include combustible and flammable gases. In the turbine enclosure./
- Coal fired power stations hazards include Carbon Monoxide in the coal storage facilities and Sulphur dioxide leaks around boilers.
Water and Waste Water Industry
In the water and wastewater industry toxic and combustible gases pose a safety threat to the operation of water and wastewater treatment plants. The gases typically encountered at these facilities include chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, Ozone and oxygen deficiency.
Areas where these hazards are found include:
- Digester Methane monitoring
- Sludge thickening
- Chlorination plants
- Dry wells and wet wells
- OSEC Sites
- Oxygen deficiency in confined spaces
- Anaerobic digestion
Steel and Metal Processing
Steel mills typically have many furnaces, which produce carbon monoxide as a by-product. This carbon monoxide combined with all of the dust makes a potentially dangerous environment for personnel. Areas of concern are all levels of the buildings and enclosed areas where carbon monoxide can accumulate.
Areas where these hazards are found include:
- Furnace areas
- Pits and underground walk ways.
Landfill sites and brown field developments
Due to the lack of available development land, brown field sites are becoming a more cost effective alternative for development. Combustible and asphyxiate gases are produced by the decomposition of waste. These gases can migrate from the landfill site to developments near by. Personnel and facilities need to be protected.
Areas where these hazards are found include;
- Buildings and factories built on brown field sites
- Houses built near to brown field sites
- Buildings on the landfill site
